Layer Meme Sep. 30th, 2012 @ 12:45 am
So I've been yelled at by a couple folks within the last few days regarding my infrequent posting. Honestly, though, nothing new has happened recently. Still looking to buy a house. Still working as a teacher although I've got chemistry added back into the mix. Forgot how much I dislike running chem labs. Not dating anyone and perfectly content on that front for now. Other than that? Nothing new with me. So. Here, have a meme.

This Is a Thing Now Aug. 2nd, 2012 @ 02:01 am
I generally avoid political and socioeconomically divisive topics when posting on my various social media forums. I recognize that my friends, family, and business associations have widely different backgrounds and experiences that lead to widely different belief structures. I happen to find this fantastic; I love discussing varying view points. This is how we grow; by encountering other viewpoints and philosophies and keeping the good parts. It's okay if we disagree on what, exactly, the "good parts" might entail.

Most of the time.

Because hatred is never acceptable. Never.

For Once, A Soapbox That's Not About Science Or Education But Is Equally Long WindedCollapse )

I will never support hatred of any kind against any person or group of people. I will not. And so I respectfully decline to do business with anyone who supports those who do. It's as simple as that.

Magical Science Jun. 17th, 2012 @ 01:53 pm
First - Revamped my lj banner. Much more artistically cohesive and also centered. Woot!

Second - I'm a little bit addicted to Avengers. In a way that is perfectly healthy and normal and not at all stalkerish or obsessive. Really. The best thing about having a new, perfectly insane rational interest is that you can find a lot of folks online who are equally crazy share the same interests. And then there are the haters. The "I couldn't enjoy the movie because of BAD SCIENCE" types. I understand this, I really do. If you're watching a movie that is supposed to be realistic, I'm right there with you. But if you're watching science fiction and/or comic book movie 'verse, this is a rather ridiculous stance to take.

More on Magical ScienceCollapse )

Also, how many times has magical aka BAD SCIENCE inspired real innovation? So give it a rest, grab a bag of popcorn, sit back, and just enjoy the ride.

Writer's Block: The happiest movies on earth Nov. 17th, 2011 @ 07:07 am
Hi, I'm still alive!

What is your favorite Disney movie?

Great Mouse Detective. If you count Pixar as Disney then I would place Up in a close second with Beauty and the Beast a close third.

Steampunk Con Mar. 13th, 2011 @ 05:17 pm
I finally went to my first non work related convention; a Wild Wild West / Steampunk convention held at Old Tucson Studios.

Details and PicsCollapse )

All in all a very enjoyable break from work. Despite a few bumps along the way (the convention lost my concert ticket but happily gave me a new one when I showed them my receipt) it was a fantastic weekend and I can't wait for next year's con. And this time, I'll make sure I have a proper camera for it.

Just Because Feb. 17th, 2011 @ 04:32 pm
I haven't posted in forever and I saw this meme running around in a few places. For whatever reason, I enjoy this sort of thing so two birds, one stone, etc.

You know the drillCollapse )

There you go; proof that I'm still alive

California Trip Jul. 28th, 2010 @ 04:04 pm
I spent a week in California with a few of my sisters at the beginning of the month. We managed to plan our trip while the state was in a bit of a cold spell - overcast, rainy, and cold. Too bad we couldn't take some of that back with us. Here are a few pics.

Fun in the...hey, where's the sun?Collapse )

California is nice enough but, unlike Alaska, I have absolutely no desire to move there. Still, fun place to vacation!

Alaska Pics Jun. 9th, 2010 @ 11:47 am
I've found that after visiting Alaska, I would gladly move there in a heartbeat if only they didn't have all that pesky snow in the winter. I told one of my sisters that she has to move there so that I can come visit in the summers.

I took an astounding number of pictures - combined with my sister's pics, I have a rather frightening collection. What I've posted here is just a small, teeny-tiny fraction to help illustrate how absolutely stunning Alaska is.

This way to pics and commentaryCollapse )

All in all it was an absolutely amazing experience.

Not Cynical Apr. 20th, 2010 @ 04:31 pm
I'm really not a cynical person but my state legislature certainly tasks me.

New Immigration Law

Between this and what they've been doing to education...

On a happier note, congrats to my sister, Alicia, on her engagement!

Also, my new favorite website: Symphony of Science. I highly recommend these - they're beautifully done. They've also been nominated for a "Webby" and you can vote for them here under the video remixes category.

I've been watching the new Dr Who. Love the new companion but I'm still uncertain about the Dr. The new TARDIS interior is...unsettling. It's a bit 70's for my taste, I think. Still, Steven Moffat is a genius writer and so, here's hoping. *fingers crossed*

Other than that, it's pretty much business as usual.

Thank You! Mar. 26th, 2010 @ 07:04 am
Thank you, Anonymous! I love the balloons - they made me smile. (And they're also appropriate for today - I'm starting static electricity w/ my general kids and there's always the classic rub your balloon w/ cat fur and stick it on the ceiling demo...)

A most excellent start to my weekend. Thanks!
